On the Fence

This blog shares real-world stories, lessons learned, and practical insights from the jobsites of Renegade Fence installers. There’s a surprising amount that goes into what might seem to some like “just a simple fence.” From wood fence and gate installations to the realities of running a small trade business, I'm documenting the wins, the challenges, and everything in between.

Tedious and Messy, But Worth It: Cedar Fence Stains

I've been doing quite a few fence stains this season. I won't lie, they're messy, tedious, and annoying to do; but gee, they sure look great when they're finished!

The stain used for this one was Ready Seal in Natural Cedar. It’s a great product and very easy to use. The way it soaks into the wood helps prevent blotching and drips. Fully transparent oil stains also do a great job of bringing out the natural beauty of the wood grain.

This job was a pickets and rails replacement only. They had metal posts, so they didn't need new ones. Which is why I always recommend going with metal posts if you're putting in a new fence! It's absolutely worth the little bit of extra cost!

Full transparency, for how much I recommend steel posts, I don't make anything extra if you pay a little more for metal. Wood and metal posts take the same amount of labor, which is where I earn my keep. Metal is simply the superior product!

This was another project where the neighbors thought it turned out great! I turned around and did the same thing across the street right after finishing this one! I take great pride when my work sells itself. I’ve also been itching to get into fence restoration. If you’ve got an old fence that needs to be re-stained or cleaned up, I’ll give you a great price if you’re willing to be my guinea pig. If you'd like to join the crowd and get a Cedar Fence with a stain job on it, please let me know!
